Everything we do, physically, mentally or spiritually, translates into physical tension of some kind. Our muscles move us physically but they also hold our emotions. We know a person to be happy or stressed simply because of the characteristic postures they adopt.
When we are young, through persistent attention to our physical sense we learn to balance our body in the upright position, and we walk with natural grace and poise. However, as we sit first at school and then at office desks, or in front of the TV, we choose physical postures which become habitual. Through our body language we subconsciously take on physical and mental attitudes which link us to our communities, and helped us to fit in.
As we grow, we allow external demands to distract us from attending to our well being and our physical awareness declines while our bodies begin the tell the story of the pressures we are under.
While we give more attention to pressing matters, such as our jobs, the mortgage repayments and our relationships, we are unaware of the damage we are doing to ourselves. The Poise Method raises awareness of the habits and tensions we need to undo in order to restore good posture, vitality and poise.
To see someone sitting or moving with awareness nowadays appears and looks odd to us. Instead we are more comfortable with a forward slump, our rib cages and shoulders falling over our stomachs. It feels comfortable and natural, but it is not! It is a learnt experience that puts some of our muscles and ligaments under constant strain while other muscles and ligaments are under used.
The Poise method rebalances the musculature and ensures that the appropriate sets of muscles are working, but not overworking. The method develops tone and raises your fitness level as the muscles are encouraged to work in a sustainable, balanced way.
